These include centuries old French iron gates, a magnificent Arc de Triomphe detailed in Venetian stucco and an Italianate balustrade staircase, which winds through the forest alongside bronze lions and replica statues from the Trevi Fountain in Rome.”Our design inspiration comes directly from our wonderful year spent living in France and travelling throughout Switzerland, Monaco and Italy,” Menzies says.She says the property was used as a weekender by the previous family, who held the title for around 30 years.”I remember when we first arrived, I was somewhat momentarily overwhelmed by the majesty of the 200 year old trees and the magnificent Margaret River and I pondered the question, how can anyone ever presume toownthis,in a material sense?'”I concluded in those early moments that ownership seemed the wrong word or concept and that it was actually the privileged role of caretakerthat we would undertake.”Menzies says she felt fortunate to have lived at the unique property for 27 years and had enjoyed “many fairytale moments” including brushes with nature such as watching blue wrens teach their young to fly, the daily routine of the resident kangaroos and the sounds of owls at night.”When you are in a living forest, you are very close to nature and this is very nurturing, grounding and inspiring,” she says.”You become very aware of the seasons, respectful of the wildlife and conscious of the positive energy and health benefits that a living forest generates.”The forest provides a wonderful sense of seclusion, privacy, peace and shelter but also connects you to a much deeper level of spiritual awareness which may be difficult to connect to in the frenetic world of a city.”The initial villa, La Cabine, was built as a weekender in the 1970s and the second villa, il Palazzo, and the European gardens were the vision of Menzies and Whyte.The property is just five minutes’ drive to the beach and five minutes to the Margaret River township Decorating tools.
